Supercoach
Michael Neill is running hot right now and with “Super Coach” he has produced an excellent and wide-ranging book that confirms him as one of the leading voices of the self-help world. No doubt that this book covers some of the same ground that other writers do but what sets Michael Neill apart is his story-telling ability and his knack of presenting his thoughts in a way that connects with the reader. His style of writing is engaging: it’s relaxed, funny and uses quotes and anecdotes to very good effect (you will find this blend of story, insight, quote, summary and tips used all the way through “Super Coach”).
It’s not all style over substance though: this book contains a lot of useful, practical and valuable content.
The main thrust of “Super Coach” is the idea that you create happiness from the inside out – that is to say that happiness is NOT secured through external things such as money, fame, possession or even relationships. Because happiness (and other good things such as wealth and relationships) start out internally, he emphasizes this point in the opening chapter “The Art and Science of Make Believe”. This chapter underpins the rest of the book as it explains how we all (quite literally) create our own reality through our brains interpreting the outside world in their own unique way. No-one can be absolutely objective as our beliefs, prejudices and hopes are a part of our way of understanding, and therefore, creating the world. He distils his explanation of this down to these simple points
The world is what you think it is.
You will always tend to see what it is you are looking for.
You are creating your own experience right now.
Because of this, he states that you have never been in a “stressful” situation as no situation is inherently stressful – the stress is a by-product of how you REACT to the situation. Once you get your head around this idea – that you have a choice in how you see the world and how you react to it – then it becomes a very powerful enabling tool.
This “from-the-inside-out” approach underpins the rest of the book; a good example of this being his approach to setting-goals. Neill says the problem with traditional goal-setting approaches is that they assume that goals equal happiness and happiness is therefore something that is outside of you and has to be reached. Because your happiness is already inside you and not dependent on external things then all the neediness is removed from goals and they become merely projects that you are choosing to work on. Doesn’t that feel better?
This is typical of Michael Neill’s relaxed approach which is the exact opposite of the “always striving but never arriving” view of life. There is something reassuring about being told that you are already good enough, you don’t have to get anywhere or have anything and what you are already doing is probably better than you think. Because of this you see the sense in the chapter he has titled “Have an average day”!
The book is fairly comprehensive and has chapters covering a wide range of subjects such as decision making and managing your finances so, all in all, it’s a good resource for helping to address all of your life; it’s not just one neat idea turned into a book. This book is a great piece of work by a guy who is at the top of his game right now and saying what no-one else is saying. You should read it.
